Lord of the Sabbath
Jesus answered them, "Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry? He entered the house of God, and taking the consecrated bread, he ate what is lawful only for priests to eat. And he also gave some to his companions." Then Jesus said to them, "The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath."
“How much time do you have to do it? Work that out in the Spirit. I actually do it on the Saturday — because it's the day I can spend with my family. But do you have time set aside? … I like 24 hours. I think it's really helpful. So I'd say — pray about that. … But if not — then are you setting aside time clearly in your week — where you are not allowing that other side of work and productivity to be what defines you? Now — what do I do with my Sabbath? I do housework sometimes. I love cutting the grass on my Sabbath. … I don't want to create the rules around it. What I'm just asking you is to think about the principle of Sabbath that Jesus, I think, is affirming here. He's the Lord of the Sabbath — meaning that he still has a Sabbath. He still thinks it's a good thing. But it's a thing about freedom and life. Do you have time set apart in your week — where life and freedom is the theme?”
His charge, that Sunday
“So today — as we come to the table — let us receive the holy, consecrated — the body of Christ — as the bread that gives us spiritual life.”
